IT IS MORE THAN MERELY A FASHION STATEMENT –
IT IS AN EXPRESSION OF RESPONSIBILITY.
46664 was Nelson Mandela’s prisoner number on Robben Island: he was inmate number 466, incarcerated in 1964. 46664, a 100% subsidiary of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, was founded in 2003. And in 2006, Nelson Mandela started the campaign "46664 – It’s in our hands."

The campaign, which is the African answer to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, is financed not only through donations, but also by organising rock concerts and by selling bracelets, i.e. the “46664 Bangles,” which were first presented to the public in London’s Hyde Park on 27 June 2008 during an outdoor concert to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s ninetieth birthday.

Created by the designer Rael Kahn and manufactured from the valuable regional resources of silver, gold and platinum, the “46664 Bangles” are elaborately handcrafted by South African craftsmen, all of whom are afflicted with AIDS.

Two-thirds of the profits from the sales of the bangles flow into two channels. The first channel directly supports the initiatives and programs of the 46664 campaign of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, e.g. AIDS prevention through relevant educational work in South African schools and efforts to improve the situation of people who are suffering from AIDS. The second use for the profits is to support the continuing education and qualification of craftspeople, thus helping to create urgently needed jobs. This innovative and its socially responsible business model assure that craftsmen and workers actually benefit from the programs that are intended to improve the quality of their lives, i.e. by helping people to help themselves rather than by merely pouring money on a problem.

This project is a very personal issue for Kim-Eva Wempe: "Africa concerns us all and so much still remains to be done. I contribute my distributional network and my personal dedication to the project, and I’m proud to be part of this campaign. Please help us to set an example and to publicise 46664. The sale of just 300 silver bangles raises enough funds to create one new workplace."

The “46664 Bangle” is more than merely a fashion statement: it’s also an expression of responsibility. Each bangle is engraved with the number “46664,” as well as with Nelson Mandela’s handprint (the campaign’s logo) and an individual serial number. The bangle’s owners can use their serial numbers to sign in on the campaign’s homepage, where each owner can eternalise himself or herself by posting a personal message alongside statements by stars such as Brad Pitt, Bono, Will Smith, Razorlight and Zucchero, all of whom support the initiative. The serial number also enables each bracelet’s owner to determine who made the bangle and to find out which purposes were served by the profits from its sale.

Another 46664 concert was given, this time at Madison Square Garden in New York, on the occasion of the annual “Mandela Days” on 18 July 2009.
