14 July 2006Chronometer testing facility
In 2005, the purchase of the now dilapidated observatory in Glashütte marked the start of a daring venture. Having had the ruined building elaborately renovated, Wempe not only installed production workshops there but – in conjunction with the offices of weights and measures in Thuringia and Saxony (LMET and SLME) – established an independent chronometer testing facility on the premises as well. An institution of this type had not existed in Germany for 37 years. Only complete watches with their final case, dials and hands are accepted for chronometer testing, based on the German Industrial Standard DIN 8319. Their movements must be adjustable to the second.
